Interesting article by a pro, discussing pro's & con's of different systems. I've x-posted this to a couple other relevant tribes.

Note that he's actually *used* all the stuff he talks about, not just "tested" it -- he doesn't seem to have any "brand loyalty" to speak of: he buys what helps him shoot in the way he wants to shoot (and therefore, his choices may not suit YOU in the way YOU want to shoot... ;-) . If he tries a new system and it helps him more than his old system, he moves to the new system. If it doesn't, he sticks with the old system.

Also, there's the caveat that (now we're shooting digital) cameras change really, REALLY fast; obsolescence (or at least, the frequent addition of new/desirable features) is a fact of life. So today's choices may be different tomorrow.

All of which he owns up-front. It's a good read, very interesting:

I mean if I put it through photoshop or lightroom, it allows me to make them 600ppi at 20x30 print, but I assume that some of those pixels are filler the program makes up in order to reach 600ppi ... how do I know the true limit of ppi I can get too in each photo from each camera, also if I crop something, how can I figure out how big I can make it before I loose that true 300ppi print?

Learning the controls of my dSLR what would you do?

I've had my Cannon EOS 20D for 3 years now. For two of those years I've taken a decent amount of shots. I'm sorry to say that my camera still eludes me to this day. I'm somewhat embarrassed to admit I have this amazingly wonderful and expensive piece of equipment that I don't fully understand yet. That is my dilemma. I think it's partly due to the learning curve, moving from film (99% of the time - black and white) to color digital...and also not really being fond of learning the inner workings of technical pieces of equipment.

I'm going to Burning Man this year for the first time in four years and it'll be the first time bringing the dSLR out there. I want to get as comfortable with the manual controls of the camera as possible, another thing that completely eludes me. I just haven't taken the time to teach myself everything. All the automatic controls of the camera have left me lazy and not completely knowing what I'm doing regarding white balance, shooting in RAW (and its obvious advantages), or any of the other million features the camera has. I still get good shots but I want total control of the functionality of the camera, so I can get excellent shots, ya know? I want to feel like I'm controlling the camera, not the other way around.

I've lost the little pocket guide book to the camera that listed the basic features and ways to control the camera. Perhaps I should go online and see if I can download that.

What would you do if you were me and had two months to get a good foundation for learning all the controls of your dSLr? Would you go out and read a book? Read the manual? Google around to find a good tutorial? Look at video tutorials? I'm definitely more of a hands-on, kinesthetic and visual learner so going out and doing it will be key. There's so much information out there and I'd like to know what you have all done or could recommend to me. Thanks!

Then on top of that, I got a script for automator that works with Aperture to read the incoming photos from a folder in realtime, and then import and display them, while storing them into an Aperture library.

It finally all became clear, and just worked. Ohhhh this is so fabulous! Everything I shoot with the camera goes to the computer, automatically. And it can be auto-displayed as well.

I mentioned this issue in passing in my note of the 5D Mark II video firmware update but felt it needed it's own discussion...

The positioning of the focus points in the otherwise-spectacular 5D Mark II is severely broken. Perhaps fatally so.

Clumped together in a small lump in the middle of the viewfinder, they are essentially worthless for focusing on moving action while composing shots on the fly. If you shoot stationary objects, this likely is little more than a mere nuisance to you. But I can't believe this isn't a deal breaker for everyone else.

Granted, you could take your chances on the auto-finding focus (or whatever Canon calls it) or use one of the tracking mode and hope that it makes the right jump from point to point, but if you shoot action in low-light (such as sports or performance) and care exactly where the focus is set, this system is indelibly broken.

In the previous discussion, Michael Baxter astutely explains that the positioning is fixed in the hardware (no firmware upgrade possible) and is a leftover from the previous cropped screens of the XX-D series of Canon prosumer cameras (where the diamond pattern covered a much more significant portion of the screen). He went on to explain why this necessitated his migration to Canon's pro-level X-D series of cameras.

But I don't buy this. While the X-D's viewfinder may have more focus points (9 vs 45), they are not grouped significantly better. Once again, they are all clumped in the middle third of the screen, where they don't work for better composition. Actually, the original 9-point layout from the modest XX-D series' APS-C viewfinder does a much better job of covering the screen real estate than either of these (wildly more expensive) "pro" options.

I've posted an image of the viewfinders for both the 5D and the 1D with the focus points (cribbed from DP Review) in this tribe's gallery at http://digitalslr.tribe.net/photos/d913f1da-1f07-4b52-bf7a-1f03879434a0 and added my take on where the focus points should logically be placed. I've included 4 "corner" points at the quarter-screen marks (shown in red), 4 "diamond" points cheated out slightly from the mid-points between the "corner" points (shown in white), and finally a smaller box of third-screen points (shown in yellow). I even included a traditional center point, even though that's usually the worst place to center the focus of any image.

If Canon's bothering to produce a camera with the impressive abilities of either the 1D or 5D series, it seems they could be bothered to create a focusing system suited to professional photographer's needs and not just inherit some system laying around the lab from a previous generation.

Now if they could only fix the ridiculous focus-point issue (really? just nine points? and they're all clumped in the middle 10% of the viewfinder? really?), Canon would have the near-perfect camera on their hands.

Because I had a club gig after the Belly Dancer of the Year pageant, I took the Nifty Fifty in my gear bag, because f/1.8 is a LOT more light than f/2.8 from my 24-70mm f/2.8L lens. Before this weekend event, I practiced new sturdier hand-holding techniques espoused by Joe McNally in his book "The Hot Shoe Diaries: Big Light From Small Flashes." These really do work! I was able to take dozens of great relatively sharp photos in a restaurant that is very dark inside. Here's one:

I've found a few online, but they seem to all be scams when I do the research on them, like bingocamera.com and places like that where the prices are crazy low.

Anywhere to buy them wholesale?

What's the markup (for bargaining knowledge).

I know in a lot of places I worked when I was younger, the markup on retail items was almost 50% The camera guy at the store I usually shop at says the 5D Mark II costs them 2300 so they only make like 3-400 per camera unless there's a sale, where they only make 200 or so .. that just sounds off to me...

Thoughts anyone?

I have a bunch of weddings and other events coming up that I'm shooting, and I'd really like to have a new camera for them. I have a 40D and it's just fine for normal stuff, but for my artistic work, I like to blow things up BIG and can't do that with the 1.6crop small frame with only 10MP just not enough data to make the picture crisp at larger sizes.

Thanks to everyone who replied to Brad's post regarding my interest in recruiting photographers. And thanks Brad!

In consideration of members here, I'll only post this once. Not interested in spamming you guys. Here's the pitch...

I own a "matchmaking" service for photo buyers and photographers (www.stockphotorequest.com). Quite simply, I recruit photographers who pay me a yearly subscription fee which gives them access to my service.

How does StockPhotoRequest.com work?

As a subscriber, you receive emails with image requests from advertising and editorial Photo Buyers.

You can go to the site to upload images to one common light table per request. (Each uploaded image has links to your contact info next to it, so even if they don't use your image, you are advertising your work to your specific target market. You can see what other photographers are submitting as well and what the photo buyer has saved or deleted.)

Photo buyers contact you directly to license images. You pay NO commissions on sales.

Check out THIS set of features:

Olympus has today announced the E-30 digital SLR. The mid-range DSLR features a 12MP Live MOS sensor and 2.7" tilt and swivel LCD. It also incorportates Live View with Contrast AF, Image Stabilization, 5fps continuous shooting and shutter speeds of up to 1/8000th sec. The E-30 also introduces a set of six 'Art Filters', a Multiple Exposure mode and offers a choice of 9 aspect ratios.
The Olympus E-30: your own portable creative studio
Taking artistic creativity to new levels
London, 5 November 2008 – A creative photographer’s most important tool is the power of expression – and the Olympus E-30 delivers it in spades. For the ultimate in artistic expression, the E-30 offers six Art Filters, each of which uses different settings to create incredible photographic effects that would otherwise require additional lenses, filters or complex editing.

A Multiple Exposure mode further bolsters the potential for distinctive artistry in compositions, as do the choice of nine separate aspect ratios. With the newly-developed high-speed 12.3 Megapixel Live MOS sensor and TruePic III+ image processor*, top quality image results are ensured. Ensuring an enjoyable photo experience, the monitor facilitates Live View framing ease from virtually any angle. Furthermore, thanks to built-in image stabilisation*, shots stay impressively sharp irrespective of the attached lens.

And because sometimes the perfect shot can present itself in the blink of an eye, the E-30 boasts a range of high-speed performance features to make sure that you’ll always be ready for it: lightning-fast autofocus speeds, 5fps sequential shooting and shutter speeds of up to 1/8000th sec. The E-30 will be available from mid-January 2009

Express yourself
Six innovative Art Filters enables special artistic effects to be created directly in the camera and put you in control of your composition: styles like Pop Art, Soft Focus, Pale & Light Colour, Light Tone, Grainy Film and Pin Hole let you capture your world the way you want to portray it.
These effects would normally require special lenses, filters, or image processing programs, but with the E-30, it all happens inside the camera. You can even preview the effect of a particular filter on the 2.7”/6.9cm HyperCrystal* II LCD before shooting.

What’s more, in Multiple Exposure* mode, several images can be superimposed on a previously-captured image to take photographic creativity to a whole new level. The E-30 also offers nine different aspect ratios for nine different takes on any scene. In addition, Live View with improved high-speed contrast autofocus depictions allows for easy framing of shots on the free-angle LCD.
Quality results
A range of great technologies helps ensure that the E-30 provides picture-perfect images every time. The newly developed 12.3 Megapixel Live MOS sensor provides amazing image quality at low power requirements. Combine this with the new TruePic III+ ultra high-speed image processor, and results must be seen to be believed.
Built-in mechanical image stabilisation rounds up the package, significantly reducing image blur caused by such factors as low light or camera shake. And to ensure that the E-30’s powerful sensor remains dust-free, the patented Olympus Supersonic Wave Filter is integrated.
A need for speed
Ever waited and waited for that perfect shot, and then missed it because your camera couldn’t keep up with the action? You don’t have to worry anymore because the E-30 is always prepared. High-speed shooting of up to 5fps in full 12.3 Megapixel mode and shutter speeds of up to 1/8000th sec. will help you capture even the fastest action shots. In addition, the E-30 incorporates a fully-biaxial 11-point AF system for incredible autofocusing speeds in any lighting conditions.
Additional features and accessories
For photographers looking for integrated features to improve their shooting experience, the E-30 has a lot to offer. Shadow Adjustment Technology helps lighten shadows in shots, while Face Detection Technology recognises and focuses on the faces of subjects in a composition. An integrated Level Gauge also appears on the LCD, in the viewfinder, and on the Control Panel on the back of the camera.
This functions like a level used in construction to ensure that your pictures will never be askew. And when it comes to accessories, the E-30 also covers the whole range. As part of the Olympus E-System and based on the Four Thirds Standard, many lenses and other accessories are available to ensure the E-30 takes creativity to a higher level.
From fish-eye, macro and ultra-wide-angle lenses through to ultra-zoom models, the ZUIKO DIGITAL range of lenses leaves nothing to be desired. New in the line-up is the ZUIKO DIGITAL 14-54mm 1:2.8-3.5 II lens, which also enables full contrast AF performance with the E-30.
The Olympus E-30 gives photographers a portable creative studio and provides everything required to live out and express creativity while enjoying pro-level image results, control and performance. It will go on sale from mid-January 2009.

Hello everyone! I'm new to this tribe and new to the digital format. I was trained old-school style and I still have my darkroom, so digital is somewhat new to me. I love being in the darkroom and I'm sure I'll continue to some extent, but I am ready to try digital too. My brother finally twisted my arm and got me into digital and even though I can barely work my computer, I really like what I've done so far with photoshop and everything. I see a lot of possibility in this format. I'm intrigued and I'd like to learn more.

I think I'm ready to jump in and start investing on the equipment little by little, but since I'm a teacher now, my funds are seriously limited.

I'd like to buy myself a camera first. I want to stick with Nikon because I have my trusty N6006 which has gone around the world with me twice. Also, I don't want to have to buy all new lenses.
I can get the D60 at a pretty good price, but does anyone have any other suggestions? Is the D60 a good camera? Are there any books or anything else you can recommend for a "beginner to digital" like me?
Thank you so much everyone. I really like this tribe and I'm hoping to get back into photography more seriously. That is my New Year's Resolution anyway......

I just posted a pic of an interesting test here. There are advantages in shooting in more than one system. If you look at the pic I posted labelled "Nikon versus Olympus," some interesting things come to light (no pun intended). First the obvious difference is the aspect ratio. I'll get to that in a moment. I used the Nikon D200 and the Olympus E-3, both 10MP DSLRs, set to their respective highest jpeg settings with equal sharpening and the same exposure, although I took the images a couple of weeks apart. I used the Nikon 12-24 lens and the Olympus 9-18. Both were given the same exact post adjustment in Paint Shop Pro. Because of their different sensor sizes, both these lenses were technically supposed to give the same angle of view along the vertical axis; ie the equivalent of 18mm in 35mm photography terms. Clearly, the Olympus gave way more coverage on all fronts. Theoretically, the Olympus should have produced a less sharp, higher noise image due to the smaller "Four Thirds" sensor versus the Nikon's "APS-C" sensor. Clearly not the case, and the focusing point was the same. Not only was the E-3 and its lens sharper, but there was much more detail in highlights and shadows than the Nikon. Of course, I thought though, that there was a it, but not much over-esposure on the E-3 highlights. So, what was the point of this? To see how much in-camera software has to do with the image in comparison to sensor size. Thoughts?

A local camera shop has several used 5D's for about the same price as a new 50D so I would like to hear some pros/cons from the more experienced folk out there. The smell of new technology is always alluring, but the quality of a full frame sensor has quite the draw as well. Observations?

Thank you for your time.
The story also includes before/after proof of the fix.

It's great that this major defect (at least for people who photograph stage events where lighting often appears in frame) has been promptly addressed. Now if Canon can make the crippled (no autofocus, no manual exposure control, etc) video mode actually work...

I recently purchased my first Digital SLR. It's a little daunting compared to the point and shoot cameras. But I really want to be able to do more with my photography than a point and shoot will allow. But I have to learn how to fully use my SLR.

So I did a little research about courses I could take that would help me learn the functions of the camera. I found one that is not very expensive, can be done on my own time and availability and seems pretty decent. It's this one ... http://www.digital-slr-guide.com/

It costs $14.95 for 5 lessons. Plus you can email the guy who set up the lessons and the site if you have questions. You can download all 5 lessons at once, or get one a week. I chose the latter option, so I wouldn't be overwhelmed.

The first lesson is about aperture and shutter speed, depth of field. I've only started to read it, but already I learned something!! So far, so good. And for $14.95, I would totally recommend it for anyone new to the world of digital SLRs. After I've completed the course, I will give my final review of it, to let people know if it's really only helpful for beginners or if those who know a bit about SLRs might get something out of it. I mean, for $14.95, even if you learn one new thing, that may be worth it, if it helps raise your photographic skills up a bit.

But the upsides are that it is a full-fledged, 11-point-focusing, shake-resisting, dust-removing, 3200-ISO-shooting digital SLR camera for just $239. Factory refurbs frequently are more reliable than off-the-assemblyline products, since techs actually pay personal attention to them. Many shooters are fiercely loyal to Pentax and swear by 'em. And Woot! consistently provides some of the best deals on the entire internet.

http://sellout.woot.com/

But be warned, this deal is just for one day (Thursday, December 18th) or until stock runs out. And, as always, I have no association with the seller (other than being a frequent satisfied customer)... just giving folks looking for a deal a heads up.

I've wanted to get into shooting bands for a while, and it convinced me to take it up. I'll mostly be shooting indie and punk bands, plus some burlesque and circus stuff, in small clubs, bars, warehouses, etc. Environments rather hostile to quality photos.

I've got no gear. Suggestions? I don't want to spend over $800 on a dSLR. I would like the camera to be rather compact and quiet. Single lens. No flash. Easy operation. I'm more interested in a documentary style- don't know how much that matters when choosing gear.

A rather open ended question, I realize, but any help would be appreciated. Oh, and I like that there seems to be a pretty active conversation in this tribe, with many recent posts.

I just got back from 15 day trip to Zürich and Istanbul, which involved three remote studio photo shoots for belly dance on three days (and two of them were 12 hour long days), two different dance shows, two photo interviews, plus just numerous travel photos. Almost 5000 frames created, including lots of reviewing for the studio work, and for the shows. Lots and a lots of camera raw, about 80GB worth of photos filling 2/3 of a brand-new MacBook.

The entire trip was done with two charged LP-E4 batteries ... and ZERO battery chargers!

This is the first trip I've ever done without a battery charger, but I needed to travel gear light. I was convinced it was possible because of the battery performance over long-duration belly dance shows. I covered a dance show the night before I left, and was a little nervous, but I ultimately left with 9% power remaining on battery 2.

The efficiency, power, and capability of this camera system are just incredible!

Any one have one of these? how is the package? would you recomend it to a starter? She will be taking a digital phtography class in the winter (Jan 2009). I would love to be prepared for her.

New to dSLR and wondering what advise you'd give a newbie about .... well, anything really. Lenses, settings, filters, hints, etc.

As a convert from all-my-life-with-point-and-shoots, the appeture and shutter terminology is mind boggling. So any attempts to keep it "light" and "user friendly" would be greatly appreciated!
New Camera: Canon 400D/xti .... soon to be investing in the underwater set-up although the price tag for the housing is staggering!
