Amazon's Goldbox deal today is for the Sigma DP1 14 MP Digital Camera (sometimes referred to as "the Poor Man's Leica M8"). It has a fixed 16.6mm F4 lens (no zoom here, folks) and a 14-megapixel SLR-sized image sensor (unheard of in pocket cameras). It even has limited manual focus. On the downside, it's max ISO is 800 and it can't record JPEG and RAW at the same time (then again, most point-and-shoots can't do RAW at all).
List Price: $899.99
Yesterday's Price: $655.81
Today's Discount: - $255.82
Gold Box Price: $399.99 (56% off)

Remember: This offer is only good for Thursday, April 9.
As always, I have no ties to this offer... Just providing a heads-up for anyone interested.

Re: Today-only Deal on the "Poor Man's Leica M8"
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 1:11 AMSomewhat interesting, that Foveon sensor. Here's a review of this camera:
www.dpreview.com/reviews/sigmadp1/
Quick summary:
www.dpreview.com/news/0703...gmadp1.asp
This in-depth technical comparison of color against other cameras, including the M8 was very interesting:
www.dpreview.com/reviews/s...page20.asp
While in no way stealing Brad's thunder here, just doing some keyword searching on this camera, I found similar prices at discounters all over the web. So, if you cannot decide today, and then decide later you do like this camera, you can probably obtain it elsewhere for a similar price.
And Foveon's website, has a lot of interesting information about their color image sensor technology.

Like Brad, I have no affiliation with any of these vendors, my interest here is purely in imaging science.
Blessings and Light,

Re: Today-only Deal on the "Poor Man's Leica M8"
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 9:42 AMThanks for the links, Michael!
Can you also provide links to reliable dealers who regularly sell this camera at this price?
(I checked B&H, Adorama, and Calumet and they all sell it for around $600) -

Thu, April 9, 2009 - 9:36 PMBrad,
Yes you are apparently right, after I checked again. I suspect the sites I had found before were the low-price leaders, but not necessarily the ones you'd want to do biz with.
I hope this link will yield other possible sources of this camera, but the prices are tending toward $600

Warning: some marketing is at this link, but there is technical data there also

Re: Today-only Deal on the "Poor Man's Leica M8"
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 8:23 AMI'd rather have the Olympus E420 with a pancake 50mm lens. -

Re: Today-only Deal on the "Poor Man's Leica M8"
Thu, April 9, 2009 - 9:45 AMEven with the pancake lens (which I totally love!), you must wear pants with bigger pockets than mine if you can stuff an E420 in 'em. And at $500-600, those pockets would have to be a lil' deeper than mine to pay that for a walk-around snapshooter.
