Greetings!
I currently have a Canon 20D that I shoot the heck out of. So much so that I'm thinking about getting another camera to use when I have to send my 20 in for service or something to push the 20 into backup status. My primary use is low-light event photography, usually with a 50mm f 1.4 lens and no flash.
A local camera shop has several used 5D's for about the same price as a new 50D so I would like to hear some pros/cons from the more experienced folk out there. The smell of new technology is always alluring, but the quality of a full frame sensor has quite the draw as well. Observations?
Thank you for your time.
John

Re: Not just another "what camera to buy" question
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 7:22 PMWhile I'm not a Canon shooter, I have to tell you that I have friends who are, and the consensus I hear from them is that the 50D is a waste of plastic. The talk I hear is that the image processing isn't as good as older gen stuff, and that skipping this camera is your best bet. What I hear of the 5D, well, my choice would be to go for a low shutter actuation number and have a blast. Not being a Canon shooter I can't tell you how to find the shutter actuation number, but try to figure out how to check the total number and go with a low number 5D.

Re: Not just another "what camera to buy" question
Sat, January 10, 2009 - 8:06 PMI would skip a used 5d and go for new 5D Mark II if you can afford one. Full frame Canon requires Full Frame lens EF lenses without EF-S designation.
I've been happy with the 5D except that they should have kept the way they number the folders in the 20D. We had a 20D at my job and it finally broke after 3 years of continuous use. Other than small buffer size, I would had prefer a larger buffer, I find the buffer fills up quickly, even for non- sport photography.
The 5d is better at low light than compared with the 20 D. I never owned, the 30D, 40 D or the 50D. In about a year or so they will fix any bugs hopefully in the 5D Mark II, and used 5D will probably be had on the cheaper side. We are in a recession so I would think photogs needing cash for their used gear will dump them. -

Re: Not just another "what camera to buy" question
Thu, January 15, 2009 - 8:07 AMI bought a 40D in oct07 when I broken my 20D. I was stunned how much better the pictures have been, and I was pretty happy with my 20D. Better in low light, too. I've never played with the 5D or the nikons. -

Re: Not just another "what camera to buy" question
Thu, January 15, 2009 - 10:49 AMYes, the 40D is a great camera. My friend Valerie killed her older camera at a wedding she was hired to shoot, of all places.(one of the reasons I keep a backup around). She reviewed shots from a 40D, a 50D and I can't remember which other Canon. BUt she decided the 50D wasn't as good as the 40D, and that's what she purchased, and has been happy since.
