After several configuration attempts across several months, today I was finally able to get the Canon WFT-E2 wireless transmitter to wirelessly transmit photo data from a Canon EOS 1D Mark III, directly onto a MacBook.
Then on top of that, I got a script for automator that works with Aperture to read the incoming photos from a folder in realtime, and then import and display them, while storing them into an Aperture library.
It finally all became clear, and just worked. Ohhhh this is so fabulous! Everything I shoot with the camera goes to the computer, automatically. And it can be auto-displayed as well.
Apologies if this wireless capability is old-hat to some of you ...Ugh, it took me quite a while to figure this out.
Blessings and Light,
M

Re: Success with the Canon WFT-E2
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 12:38 PMCool, I can't afford the $1000 price tag for the wireless transmitter, me thinks $25 Belkin USB 2.0 to mini USB "b" was a $925 richer decision. -

Re: Success with the Canon WFT-E2
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 10:19 PMI tend to totally agree abject, but ....
Wireless is wireless. It's very much better than having cabling tied to the camera, IMHO, whatever the price for doing so. I kind of wish that I'd devote the money to the 28-105mm f/4L lens instead, but it became a sunk cost.
At a previous shoot in LA, years ago, I already learned my lesson having wired cabling anywhere near my camera. It was close enough for a belly dancer to kick over ... which was the very first damage I sustained in belly dance, a br0ken 16-36mm f/2.8L lens.
I used the unit at a photo shoot today, and it worked fabulously. We checked our work on the laptop, all day long. Just incredible.
I could work tethered, but I per above, I've found cabling quite an anathma to freedom to move about ...
Blessigns and Light,
M

Re: Success with the Canon WFT-E2
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 6:59 PMWow, that sounds ugly. I know you too are a compiler guy and solve bizarre technical problems on computers as a day job so I can only speculate how awful it would have been for the typical man on the street (so to speak.) -

Re: Success with the Canon WFT-E2
Sun, June 21, 2009 - 10:24 PMYou are right Gary. I'm reasonably competent as a sysadmin, though that's not even my main advocation.
It took me quite a while to figure this thing out! The user manual is totally useless. Now that it actually work, what's amazing is how well engineered it really is, it's quite flexible. But a certain amount of computer configuration know-how is required to get a first-ever result .... if you lack that, or any one thing is not working, you cannot get there from here. I had numerous starts that were each 1-2 steps away from working, but I didn't know this.
Wish you well.
Blessings and Light,
