I'm thinking of buying my wife one of these - any advice? I'm looking for a stand-alone unit, so that a computer is not needed.
Thanks!

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 6:48 PMYou want a digital SLR where you don't need a computer? Well, technically, no DSLR requires a computer. You could just take the CF card out of the computer, run over to you handy, dandy department store and they could print your photos for you. But.........
You're losing all the creative control of post processing. Perhaps you should consider getting her a digital point and shoot.

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 7:37 PMif you don't have a computer, why go digital? why not stick with a film camera? aside from on-camera lcd review, i can't see the benefit of digital without the ability to computer-process afterwards...
but if she wants the control of an slr without a computer, then i'd recommend sticking to film. that way she will have hard copy (film) archives of her work. without a computer, if you print straight from your memory card and then reuse it without uploading the raw images to a computer, you'll eventually have to erase the file and therefore lose the opportunity to reprint (or process eventually on a computer, etc). i guess you could burn the images to cd or flash drive, but without a backup system in place (i.e. on a computer) it's hard to trust those storage devices.
my 2 cents,

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 8:51 PMI'm a dumbass - sorry.
I've got a couple digital cameras (DiMage 7, which I pretty much detest, and a little Sony Cybershot, which is actually pretty cool), and I want to add a PRINTER. (sorry for the shouting).
now, anyone have some advice, other than I should proof my posts?
sorry and thanks,

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 9:09 AMThe cyber shot is a great line, for just taking pics in general, ad a photo printer and you can plug right in, and make your own prints. That's the simple least exspensive way to go if you don't want the computer processing or the cost of film and developing it.

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Tue, November 22, 2005 - 3:34 PMBest PRINTER = COSTCO
You could buy your own and always be out of ink, out of paper, fussing to get it to print anywhere close to how it should look, pulling out paper jams and have your prints ruined by moisture/damnness, OR
you could take you CF card to Costco and get Fuji Crystal Archive paper which will outlast all of us AND save money.
Its cheaper and just better to go to Costco.
My two cents..

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Wed, November 23, 2005 - 12:42 AMIf you are looking for a home solution for printing, look at the Epson PictureMate Deluxe. $199 and $0.29 per print...pretty sweet deal. -

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Thu, November 24, 2005 - 4:07 PMsweet but costco still beats it at .17/print. plus you don't have to buy the printer/ink/paper either.
i'm just sayin...:) -

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Thu, November 24, 2005 - 4:24 PMnot to mention the prints look a shed load better. My only gripe with Costco is that only two of their sizes are full frame for a 35mm camera (4x6, 12x18), so its a pain to have to tweak things in photopshop to add borders so the other sizes dont crop the image. If they did a 8x12 it would be just about perfect... -

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Thu, November 24, 2005 - 4:31 PMThey do 8x12 at my Costco. In fact my 8x 10's are printed on 8x12 paper almost all the time which is sort of a pain as they then need to be trimmed. I don't know why it's not an available option online but there ya go... -

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Thu, November 24, 2005 - 4:37 PMI've never done the printing at Costco, I always upload and then they email me when I should go pick them up. I dont shop there because its like a zoo on a bad day and im afraid I'll come home with a bunch of things I dont need...
I'll try that though - thanks, you're pain is my pleasure!

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 1:48 PMCostco uses Fuji Frontier digital photo printers (as I recall - haven't been there in about 10 years), which print from rolls of 10" or 12" paper (depending upon model), so if they do not offer an 8x12 size, it must be operator ignorance or laziness, or management inflexibility. The machine is capable of it.
And, yes, RA4 process paper (Kodak Endura or Fuji Crystal Archive) is still the best image quality, and cheapest, fastest, longest lasting way to make photo prints. Just that it's not feasible to have such a machine at home :)

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Mon, November 21, 2005 - 8:36 PMI have a friend who does this, she takes the CF cards into Costco, they make her a set of prints (which on their printer looks stunning) and they also make her a CD for archival. It works fine, Costco's autocorrect seems to do a great job and she is very happy with the arrangement. I'mm sure other places do the prints+CD thing too.
You can pick up a little 12" Apple refurb for $700... -

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Wed, November 23, 2005 - 12:23 AMya, I've been using costco too, and have gotten nothing but great prints... and I love that they use fuji paper.... (I'm not a big fan of anything kodak does) ;) -

Re: New Here, outa the gate with a question
Sat, May 3, 2008 - 1:55 PMin the digital age, it is completely pointless to render an alliance towards or against any particular paper company. I can guarantee that, using a digital photo printer (Fuji Frontier, ZBE Chromira, Durst Epsilon, etc.), I can make the same print on both Kodak and Fuji paper, and you would not be able to tell the difference.
These companies periodically change their emulsion formulas, so one company that used to make the best paper, will eventually be outpaced by the other.
The choice comes down to surface finish. I particularly like the Kodak Matte on their newer Endura Ultra paper - very fine diffusion, and very matte which lets the image really come through.
Incidentally, the ZBE Chromira yields the best picture quality overall (My unbiased opinion... I helped design it :) This machine can be found in many professional color labs and some ameture labs as well.
