I am thinking of getting a camera package together for my daughter. I see that olympus has a little set up with two lenses and a decent body. Any one have one of these? how is the package? would you recomend it to a starter? She will be taking a digital phtography class in the winter (Jan 2009). I would love to be prepared for her.

One of the things about jumping into the dSLR foray is that you should be thinking about not just now, but also ten years from now. You're buying into a system, and changing horses down the road can get expensive.

I personally would stick with either Canon or Nikon, as they have the widest availability of lenses and other support hardware.

As Patti says, if you can, try to stick with one of the largest brands. Both Nikon and Canon have huge amounts of ancillary gear, such as flashes and remotes and lots of other accessories. If your daughter gets into photography deeply, she will eventually want more gear. ANdf the big two have HUGE amounts of used gear around, making it easier to enlarge your equipment pile.

My first was a e500 - loved it just changed to a e510 for the stab sys in the body. Went to the Red Bull air races and it worked great.

As someone here who shoots Nikon, Canon, and Olympus, I can tell you that Olympus is the underrated gem. They have enough lenses and accessories for the pro and the image quality is outstanding. Despite the smaller sensor of the Oly DSLRs, their in-camera processing engine does such a great job in regards to image sharpness, clarity, and color, that they can hold their own against the two giants. Here's an experiment I did. I took the Olympus E-510 and My Nikon D80 and took a vertical shot of a house. I made sure that both cameras were on the highest quality jpeg setting and used the Olympus first to take the shot, filling the edges of the frame with the house. I then did the same with the Nikon. Since the image sizes aren't in the same proportion, the Nikon gave me a bit more on the top and bottom, but the house was still edge to edge the same. I printed a 12x16 from the Olympus file, and printed a 12x18 from the Nikon file, and cut down the extra two inches off the Nikon print, so that it matched the one from the Olympus print. I asked my pro photographer friends to tell me which image they liked better in terms of color, clarity, etc. Almost across the board, the Olympus one was chosen. There is more to image quality than sensors, and band reputations.

thank you for all the input. I shoot witha pentaxbecause I have a wide assortment of lenses from before. but she will be starting from scratch with her collection of pieces. I have also noted a sony that is hitting walmart but I am afraid to see the quality as the quality of the nikon and canon dropped when hitting the walmart shelf.

The quality of Nikon and Canon didn't drop because they hit Walmart, but rather the companies looked at the chain of stores as a way of increasing sales. Plain and simple, they eschewed the stigma in favor of the profit. Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Sony, Pentax, etc. are all putting out vastly improved DSLRs than from just a few short years ago. In fact, I would argue that one of the reasons that Canon has outsold Nikon by a small percentage is because Canon had been putting product in chains like these for some time, while Nikon has not. Don't be surprised if this move puts Nikon above Canon in sales within 3 years.
