I have not used my 20D since it came home from the factory for repair and cleaning almost 2 years ago when I bought my 40D. A friend wants to buy it, I have a battery and charger also. What's it worth?

Also -- value on the 17-85EFS image stabilizer lens? Fresh back from factory cleaning too?

thank you.

    Soooz,

Well, I looked on ebay and very much was shocked at the decline in value of this incredible workhorse camera. Mine were sure considerably more expensive when I bought them, ouch this hurts to read about.

You can check for yourself, but various kit configurations were in the range of ~$300, sometimes less, sometimes more. Yours is probably in much better shape than the ones priced less, due to the factory refurb, so "more."

This is just some quick research I did ... your mileage may vary, taxes and dealer destination charges are not included in sticker shock.

    Good luck!

    Blessings and Light,
    M

Because dSLR technology advances so quickly, the cameras don't tend to hold their value very well. The difference in feature set and quality between a 20D and a 50D is huge.

I checked ebay & craigslist looks like the camera is good for about $450-500, and the lens about $300-400. I have a battery and charger to throw in too. Another friend who shoots said the whole kit's worth about $750-800. Heck, it cost about $450 for the servicing and repair!
Other opinions welcome. Again, the prospective buyer is a friend, and I want to be fair without being *too* generous.

Keep in mind that the prices on Craigslist & eBay are "asking" prices and not necessarily the prices that the item sells for.

The big chains used prices are more realistic but you could consider discounting their markup for your friend

This is what I was thinking as well. The stores prices are also asking prices, but are probably much more reasonable as the cameras are likely to be in decent shape and probably have a small warranty (30 days? 10 days?). If you wanted to use the store's price as a guide and discount from there (the buyer is already saving sales tax AND knows that the camera was factory serviced), well, that would be a decent buy. You might even check the camera stores that purchase used equipment and maybe you can find a middle ground between the store's purchase price and selling price.

Good luck. It can always be hard to sell something to a friend.

It's just hard to part with tools of any kind that still work. Even if my newer tools are better. I shot burning man 06 with that kit.
But the friend that wants it is also a damn good artist, and it's a good investment for him. I'll throw in a 1gig card, too,
              ;-)

Think of the phrase, "Pay it forward."

It'll feel really good when you see his work with it, and if he takes good care of it, he'll hopefully be able to sell it to the next person who will also benefit from it.

Not to be a negative ninny, but I wish you had asked this before sending the equipment out because I would have advised you not to bother sending it to Canon and it'd be more worth you're while to sell them as they were.

I agree with others, the decline of digital cameras is huge. I'm a photographer, but I also make money by buying and selling canon equipment, and I almost always try to buy lenses but not the camera's themselves if I can help it because people expect the prices to be only a few hundred less than they purchased them, but the old axiom "invest your money in the glass/lenses not the camera" has never been more true. I bought my 40D 2 year ago and spent 1600 .. now it's not worth 800.... how's that for a kick in the pants! There's a few reasons, one is that the Rebel's that have 12megapixels and are the same exact frame size 1.6crop can be purchased for 800-1000 so those who would think about buying a 40D look at the 2 and say, hmm I can spend $1000 for a new 40D with 10MP or I can buy a new Rebel T1i with 12MP and HDvideo for the same price... hmm which should I buy... the difference isn't far enough appart, however the 5D or 1D series' are farther ahead with no smaller counterpart to follow them by, so theirs a greater chance of resale value.

Random, but I have a Canon 1N and I'd like a reasonably priced 1V to replace it .. anyone looking to get rid of one? (it's one of the few pieces of equipment I want for ME and not to sell and of course haven't been able to find one...)

"Keep in mind that the prices on Craigslist & eBay are "asking" prices and not necessarily the prices that the item sells for. "

You can search just the completed auctions (using the option in the left-hand column). Note, the green auctions closed successfully (red indicates an auction failed to receive a bid or meet the reserve price).

Without comparing details of the packages, most of the 20D's on eBay are closing at $300-400 (with a few $600 packages including lens). I'd say that's the market price, no matter how much you dropped in refurb. In fact, at this point, I'd suggest looking at the sale as a way to recover just the refurb cost, not the camera itself.

Brad, the best way to see what you can really get for your camera, pretend to sell it, get to the screen where it want's you to look for you're particular product, find it and then when you go to the screen where you're supposed to fill all the info in, go to the price you want the item to be, make sure you're under the "buy it now/fixed price listing" and at the top of that box it will say something like "the average sale of the item you are trying to sell is $400.00 etc.. really convenient...

To make things easier I just did it for you guys... so in her case it reads for the 20D...brace yourselves..... " Items like yours that sold successfully have an average sold price of $358.00. Get ideas about pricing by searching completed listings."

so if she lists it for 350 (just the camera, not the lens) it may sell, but will probably take a while (not that she's in a hurry) if she lists it for 400 it probably won't sell unless she's really convincing, or includes the lens with it...

anyway good luck to all :)

If it's any consolation, my car engine blew up yesterday and I am now faced with buying a new car (or new engine) and I'm a broke actor/photographer/generally starving artist.... haha

thank you all for your input. I appreciate the experience.
And grateful that I paid around $1100 for my 40D a little less than 2 years ago. I have a 24-105 lens that I love, but it has a small scratch in the glass that is otherwise not showing up in photos. I think it could also use a cleaning. Or should I not bother servicing it?

if you want to get really creative, you could call canon's parts department and order the glass element, it should probably only cost about $30 believe it or not, and replace it yourself LOL but yea if you don't see it in pictures, I wouldn't worry too much, of all the lenses the outer lens sucks in the most light and is broader in light information so it's the most likely not to show up on a picture, whereas the inner lenses have more compact light information, that's why dust specks show up much more on inner lenses ... I'd wait till you have inside dust to send it out and have it cleaned ... just my advice, I could be wrong.

stone, lenses mounting and reinstallation requires precision gear calibration.

oh haha, I haven't ever done it, just knew the prices because I've called before to check for some gear I bought that was scratched up. sold it before I could even order the outer lens though, so good to know haha
